This work is inspired by the shades and shadows of dappled light as day fades on the Australian landscape, in particular the historical industrial tones of Sydneys iconic Cockatoo Island, which is one of my favourite outings on Sydney Harbour. a UNESCO World Heritage Site Cockatoo Island is steeped in history, much of which is well preserved and has been 'home' to many things: a place for the Eora First Nations people, a penal colony, an industrial school and reformatory as well as a populat TV and film location. Visible remnants of the dockyards that launched many a ship are still very prominant on the island and from the surrounding waters. We can’t crack a bottle on the canvas but can certainly raise a glass to the collector who sees a place for this in thier home/office!
The theme is consistent with Rachel's current work, which explores Australia’s unique ecosystem, rich colours and topography embedding shapes and lines predominantly seen only from the air. The spiral, which can be seen in all of her current work, symbolises evolution and our relationship with and impact on the environment in hope that we as a society can appreciate, protect and nurture what we have before it’s too late.
